Photography has become a big part of how I spend my time, especially since retiring. I enjoy getting out with my camera, exploring new places, and seeing what I can find along the way.



Wildlife and landscape photography are probably what I enjoy most. There’s something about heading out early in the morning with no guarantee of what I’m going to come back with that I really enjoy. Sometimes everything comes together, and sometimes it doesn’t. That's just part of wildlife and nature photography.

A lot of my photography trips also take me through small towns, back roads and rural areas, so Americana has naturally become another part of what I photograph. Old barns, weathered buildings, farms and other things that show some history or character tend to get my attention. I’m just as likely to stop for an old building along a country road as I am for a scenic overlook.

I also enjoy still life and creative photography. It gives me a chance to slow things down and experiment with lighting, composition, and different ways of photographing ordinary objects. I photograph people and pets from time to time as well, and I prefer those images to feel comfortable and natural rather than overly posed.

My background before photography was pretty varied. I served in the military and later worked in healthcare and hospitality, including more than 25 years in the hotel industry. Photography eventually became a creative outlet for me and, over the years, grew into something I wanted to take more seriously.

I earned an Undergraduate Certificate in Digital Photography from Sessions College for Professional Design. I continue to learn through workshops, seminars, photography groups, and simply spending time behind the camera. I don't think you ever really finish learning photography, which is part of what keeps it interesting.

Photography has also given me a good excuse to travel. Some of my favorite trips are built around photographing wildlife, landscapes, and whatever else I happen to find along the way. I tend to prefer state and national parks, wildlife refuges, small towns and back roads over the usual tourist stops.
